Months of Freedom: How Long Could You Last Without a Paycheck?
One simple number says more about your freedom than your salary does. We'll show you how to calculate it and increase it step by step.
CZK amounts are approximately converted to US dollars (1 USD ≈ 22.22 CZK).
How many months could you last if your income stopped tomorrow? This simple question says more about your freedom than your salary does.
What are months of freedom?
Months of freedom show how long you can cover your regular expenses using only what you've already set aside. It's not about how much you earn, but how long you could maintain your current lifestyle without earning anything.
Freedom isn't measured by how much you earn, but by how long you don't have to.
How to calculate them
Take all the savings you can access quickly: your bank account, savings account, and cash. Add up your actual monthly expenses — rent, food, utilities, transport, loan payments, and even the little things. Divide your savings by your expenses.
Example: savings of 180 000 Kč (≈ $8,101), expenses of 30 000 Kč (≈ $1,350) per month. 180 000 : 30 000 = 6 months of freedom.
What the number tells you
Less than 1 month: you're living paycheck to paycheck, and every unexpected event is a crisis. 1 to 3 months: you have an initial cushion, but one major change will use it up. 3 to 6 months: stability. You can handle a job loss or illness without panic. 6 to 12 months: room to make decisions — change jobs, pursue further education, start a business. More than 12 months: real choice. You work because you want to, not because you have to.
Two ways to increase the number
The first way is to build up your savings — set money aside regularly, even small amounts. The second is to reduce your expenses. This is often quicker: every koruna you don't spend each month boosts the number in two ways — your savings grow, and you need less of them at the same time.
The most powerful approach is to combine both with a growing income. There's a limit to how much you can cut, but no ceiling on what you can earn.

Model example and calculation limits
The example of 180 000 CZK (≈ $8,101) in reserves and 30 000 CZK (≈ $1,350) in monthly expenses is a model, not a real user case or personalised financial advice. With unchanged expenses and no additional income, it gives six months. Separate essential from optional expenses, include irregular payments and unexpected costs, and use only reserves that are genuinely available. The result is a snapshot, not a safety guarantee: expenses and access to reserves can change. The ranges above are illustrative, not universal recommendations.
